Elysa Smith, a law student at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University School of Law, has been named the winner of the 2023 Anidjar & Levine Community Service Scholarship. With a 3.6 GPA from Florida State University and a passion for community service, Smith exemplifies the qualities the scholarship seeks to honor.
Smith’s dedication to serving others is deeply rooted, inspired by her mother’s emphasis on giving back, particularly in education. She has actively contributed to multiple off- and on-campus organizations, promoting education, charity, and inclusion. As the Membership Chair of the Black Female Future Attorneys (BFFA), Smith played a crucial role in recruiting new members and ensuring the organization met the needs of all its members.
Beyond her peers, Smith has also devoted her time to mentoring and empowering youth. For two years, she held leadership roles at Jewels Incorporated at FSU, an all-girls mentoring program focused on education, training, and social activism. She has mentored, tutored, and coached dance classes for children of all ages, emphasizing the importance of educating the mind, body, and heart.
Smith’s commitment to service has not only made her a stronger leader but also a more empathetic person. As she eloquently stated in her essay, ‘showing empathy and compassion to someone goes a very long way, whether you see the fruits of your harvest or not.’
The Anidjar & Levine Community Service Scholarship provided Smith an opportunity to highlight her passion for community service and its impact on her leadership abilities. Her involvement in college organizations, such as her sorority and the BFFA, helped her develop strong communication skills, become a better listener, and foster a team-oriented mindset that motivates others around her.
As a leader, Smith has learned to embrace diverse perspectives, ideas, and skills, integrating them into her professional and extracurricular endeavors. She strives to make a difference wherever her legal studies take her, and her community service work has been instrumental in guiding her path forward.
