Comcast to Expand Fiber-Optic Network in Cheney, Enhancing Community Connectivity

Comcast and the City of Cheney have completed an agreement to bring advanced fiber broadband internet services to the community, targeting 2,800 homes and businesses in the area. The partnership will create a comprehensive 100-percent fiber-optic network offering internet, mobile, entertainment, and security services through Xfinity and Comcast Business platforms.

City Administrator Mark Schuller expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the importance of providing residents and businesses with another reliable internet service option. Rodrigo Lopez, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Pacific Northwest Region, emphasized the strategic significance of expanding network infrastructure in growing communities like Cheney.

The network expansion is part of Comcast’s broader initiative to enhance connectivity in Spokane County, which includes similar projects in Chattaroy, Medical Lake, and Four Lakes. Once necessary permits are obtained, Comcast will develop an online resource to provide project details and answer potential questions from residents.

Residential customers will benefit from multi-gigabit internet speeds, powerful WiFi coverage, and low-latency connections that support activities such as streaming, video conferencing, remote learning, and web browsing. Local businesses will also gain access to Comcast Business’s comprehensive suite of connectivity, communications, and cybersecurity solutions.

As part of its community commitment, Comcast has already installed more than 10 Lift Zones in Spokane County, providing free internet connectivity and educational digital skills content to support online learning for families.

The expansion represents a significant technological investment in Cheney, a city of 13,160 residents located 17 miles southwest of Spokane and home to Eastern Washington University. By building advanced internet infrastructure, Comcast aims to support the community’s current needs and future growth potential.
