Aeva Technologies Unveils Atlas Ultra LiDAR Sensor, Advancing Autonomous Vehicle Technology

Aeva Technologies has pushed the boundaries of autonomous vehicle technology with the launch of its Atlas Ultra LiDAR sensor, demonstrating unprecedented capabilities in perception and sensing for passenger and commercial vehicles.

The new sensor offers up to three times the resolution of Aeva’s standard Atlas product, with a configurable field of view expanding to 150 degrees across the horizon. Its on-sensor perception software enables maximum detection range up to 500 meters, providing critical technological advances for autonomous driving systems.

Notably, the Atlas Ultra features a 35% slimmer profile, allowing seamless integration behind vehicle windshields or rooflines without compromising vehicle design aesthetics. This breakthrough addresses a significant challenge in autonomous vehicle development by maintaining vehicle styling while incorporating advanced sensing technology.

At CES, Aeva collaborated with Wideye, a division of AGC Group, to demonstrate the industry’s first functional Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) in-cabin 4D LiDAR solution. The live demonstration showcased point-cloud sensing from behind a windshield, highlighting the sensor’s ability to provide enhanced long-range sensing with minimal aerodynamic impact.

The technology offers multiple advanced capabilities, including immunity to direct sunlight and other LiDAR sensor signals. It can detect small roadway objects with centimeter accuracy, distinguish between lane markers and road hazards, and track dynamic objects at significantly greater distances compared to conventional 3D time-of-flight LiDAR sensors.

Aeva has also expanded its partnership with Torc Robotics, a Daimler Truck AG subsidiary, to develop advanced safety architectures for autonomous truck technology. The collaboration aims to enable more intelligent decision-making in autonomous vehicles by sharing 4D LiDAR sensing data and utilizing a Freightliner Cascadia vehicle platform.

The company’s custom silicon, including the Aeva CoreVision LiDAR-on-Chip module and X1 System-on-Chip processor, enables sophisticated AI-powered object detection and classification. This includes identifying vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists, as well as various vehicle types.

With its Atlas Ultra sensor and strategic partnerships, Aeva is positioning itself at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology, offering solutions that promise to make self-driving vehicles safer, more efficient, and more aesthetically integrated.
