In a pioneering initiative, two non-governmental organizations, Optimize Emotions and AI Brainstorm Creator, have launched one of the world’s largest AI-assisted social media experiments. The project utilizes online videoconferencing to induce intense experiences of awe, laughter, compassion, gratitude, and a mini-Hero’s Journey in participants across the globe.
CIO Amy Chang explains the rationale behind the experiment: ‘There is something like a Recommended Daily Allowance for peak emotional states, shared by most humans. We’re exploring and refining those experiences for as many people as possible, so that social media, smartphone apps, the Internet, and AI can be net contributors to psychological well-being, instead of being soul-sucking well-being detractors as they are for so many nowadays.’
The protocols employed in this experiment draw from a diverse range of sources, including Gestalt Therapy, Mahayana Buddhism, Jungian psychology, Stoic philosophy, Neurodynamic Breathwork, cutting-edge Generative AI, and practices of contemporary neolithic tribes. Zoom sessions, open to all members, are conducted three times a week.
John Toomey, Director of Innovation, emphasizes the ongoing novelty of the sessions: ‘It never gets old because we all thrive when we consistently attain the most sublime emotional experiences, and the best way to optimize these is to share them with others. You can’t inspire others without also inspiring yourself.’
The experiment’s significance lies in its potential to revolutionize how we interact with technology and each other. Education Director Savithri Patel notes, ‘The discovery that with AI we can train our brains to attain the most transcendent peak states, customized to each of us and shared with the world instantly so that we can better cooperate with others to address the world’s toughest challenges, represents a new frontier for Humanity.’
The current sixth cohort’s ventures span various emotional and intellectual domains. In the realm of awe, participants explore and vote on wonder-inspiring online experiences, including wildlife webcam streams and space telescope images. AI-assisted group mind mapping sessions focus on creating actionable solutions for the UN’s Sustainability Goals. Gratitude exercises involve celebrating the first moments between mothers and newborns via live streams from a Philippines maternity hospital.
Laughter yoga club meetings across 31 countries form part of the experiment, as does a unique Hero’s Journey project. This initiative partners with underground schools for girls in Afghanistan, using AI to create modernized images of ancient Afghan heroines competing in virtual poetry competitions.
The experiment’s impact extends beyond individual participants. By fostering positive emotional states and collaborative problem-solving on a global scale, it has the potential to address significant societal challenges. The integration of AI in this process demonstrates how technology can be harnessed to enhance human experiences and connections rather than detract from them.
As the project continues to evolve, it may provide valuable insights into the role of technology in mental health, social cohesion, and global cooperation. The experiment’s success could pave the way for new approaches to using social media and AI for collective well-being and problem-solving on an unprecedented scale.
