In a surprising turn of events, the freelance job market is experiencing robust growth despite the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, according to the latest quarterly Fast 50 Index released by Freelancer.com. The report, based on data from 251,000 jobs posted on the platform between April 1 and June 30, 2024, reveals unexpected trends in the gig economy that challenge prevailing assumptions about AI’s impact on freelance work.
The index shows that Computer Security has emerged as the fastest-growing freelance skill, with a 27.1% increase in job postings. This surge in cybersecurity-related jobs suggests that small-to-medium businesses are increasingly turning to freelancers for their cyber protection needs. The trend is further supported by a 9.9% growth in Network Administration jobs, highlighting the growing importance of digital security across various industries.
Contrary to predictions that AI would negatively impact writing and content creation jobs, the data shows significant growth in these areas. PDF writing and Microsoft Word projects saw increases of 26.7% and 23.9% respectively, ranking second and third in the fastest-growing skills. Copy Typing also experienced an 11.6% growth, further emphasizing the continued demand for human-generated content.
Legal jobs, another area expected to be threatened by AI, have shown resilience with a 12% increase in postings. Legal Research jobs also grew by 10.8%, indicating that the legal sector continues to rely on human expertise despite advancements in AI technology.
Matt Barrie, Chief Executive at Freelancer.com, commented on the findings, stating, ‘AI is creating more jobs than it takes. While many critics continue to speculate which jobs will be made redundant with AI tools, the data shows that freelance jobs which are labeled as the ‘most at risk to AI disruption’ are in fact growing.’
The report also highlights a significant increase in general business services, with Market Research and Telemarketing ranking as the fourth and fifth fastest-growing skills, up by 21.1% and 19.4% respectively. This trend suggests that many new businesses, typically started at the beginning of the year, are now seeking freelance support to scale and grow their operations.
Interestingly, Electronic Repairs has emerged as one of the fastest-growing job categories over the past year. While ranking 19th among the top 25 fastest-growing jobs in Q2 2024 with a 10.7% increase, its year-over-year growth is staggering at 162%. This surge is attributed to the Freelancer Global Fleet Program, which deploys freelancers for in-person electronic repair jobs in select countries and cities.
The report also notes a decline in eCommerce-related jobs, which had seen a significant increase in Q1 2024. This decrease is attributed to seasonality, as entrepreneurs typically require less assistance with website setup and eCommerce platforms after the initial business launch phase.
Freelancer.com’s annual AI survey, which polled over 4,100 workers globally, provides additional insights into AI’s impact on freelancer earnings. More than half of the respondents (52.5%) reported earning either the same or more since the introduction of AI tools, with 19.2% claiming to earn significantly more. Only 17.7% of workers reported earning less, dispelling concerns about AI’s negative impact on freelancer income.
These findings have significant implications for the future of work and the gig economy. As AI continues to evolve, it appears to be creating new opportunities rather than eliminating jobs in the freelance market. The data suggests that freelancers who adapt to new technologies and focus on high-demand skills like cybersecurity, content creation, and specialized business services are likely to thrive in this changing landscape.
For aspiring freelancers, the report identifies Graphic Design, PHP programming, Photoshop, Website Design, and HTML programming as the most popular skills by total volume. These areas offer promising entry points for individuals looking to start their freelancing careers.
