NAVEX, a leading provider of integrated risk and compliance management software, has released its 2024 Whistleblowing & Incident Management Benchmark Report, offering valuable insights into workplace culture and reporting trends. The report analyzes 1.86 million global reports spanning thousands of organizations employing over 50 million employees.
According to Carrie Penman, NAVEX Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, ‘This year’s report introduces crucial third-party reporting insights, highlighting an organization’s need to adopt internal and external reporting avenues to bolster integrity, foster accountability and equip the organization to tackle emerging challenges effectively.’
Key findings from the report include:
Report volume and case substantiation reached milestones, with a record 1.57 reports per 100 employees and a substantiation rate of 45%, the highest in 11 years. Third parties were more likely to report business integrity and financial misconduct issues, with 50% of their reports related to business integrity matters compared to 17% from employees.
Accounting-related reports, while lower in overall percentage, often receive significant attention due to potential regulatory action and whistleblower reward programs. The report notes that these reports had the longest time between observation and reporting, were least likely to be anonymous, and experienced the longest investigation times.
Even a small increase in report volume significantly improved the mix of report types received, indicating a robust reporting culture. Workplace behaviors and discord were clearly visible in the data, with workplace civility, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation reports increasing as employees returned to offices.
The report highlights the importance of fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment, as well as the need for effective internal and external reporting avenues to address emerging challenges.
